South Portland Walkabout

August 5, 2011

“Mention Hebrew School, the Neighborhood House, basketball, or the ubiquitous junk peddlers, and photographs come out and stories are retold…. There will never be another South Portland.”

Stories from Jewish Portland by Polina Olsen (The History Press, 11.2011)

On Sunday, August 21, 2011, join author Polina Olsen for a walking tour of historic Jewish Portland.

In the 1900s, Eastern European and Sephardic Jews began to settle in Old South Portland. For years, the neighborhood was home to a thriving Jewish community. There were kosher butchers, bagel makers, a Yiddish press, and courses in citizenship and English offered by the Neighborhood House. Polina will introduce you to the landmarks of this historic district and share memories from people who lived in the old neighborhood.

The tour will benefit the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland. For more information, contact
